Rescue centres 'full' of animals given up because of landlord bans on pets

Rescue Centres Overwhelmed with Animals Given Up Due to Landlord Pet Bans

According to Martina Kenny, founder of My Lovely Horse rescue centre, the housing crisis in Ireland has led to a significant issue with animals being handed over to rescue centres because their owners are banned from keeping pets by their new landlords.

“It’s terrible, it’s really terrible,” said Martina Kenny. “A pet can be a really huge part of your family; it can help mental health, the children can be in bits without it. The family would be in bits without it.”

The shortage of rental accommodation and surging house prices have forced many people to move into homes where pets are not allowed, including properties under the jurisdiction of Approved Housing Bodies (AHBs). Cork County Council has approved a motion urging the Department of Housing to reconsider the rule.

Rescue centres like My Lovely Horse are now "full" of animals who have been given up by their owners due to these pet bans, with the problem affecting not just Cork, but "all around Ireland", according to Kenny.
