New Mexico will supply $30M in emergency funding for food assistance

New Mexico to Provide Emergency Funding for Food Assistance

The State of New Mexico will provide $30 million in emergency funding for food assistance, starting November 1.

This decision was made in response to the pending stop of federal food assistance for the first 10 days of the month, as announced by Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham on Wednesday.

The move follows the United States Department of Agriculture's announcement to stop funding the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) at the end of October due to the ongoing federal shutdown.

Despite requests from members of Congress, including New Mexico's delegation, the agency refused to use contingency funds to guarantee no pause in SNAP benefits.

The $30 million in emergency funding comes from state emergency funds, which were replenished during the October 1 special session.

The state plan aims to counter the pending stop of federal food assistance.
