As the government shutdown enters its second month, 650,000 employees are receiving renewed furlough notices, this time without guarantees of back pay.
The shutdown, which began in October, is poised to surpass the record-setting 35-day impasse from 2018-2019. Agencies across the government are required to send furlough notices to employees every 30 days to maintain clarity between shutdown furloughs and more permanent cost-saving measures.
The current funding lapse entered its 31st day on Friday.
This has resulted in hundreds of thousands of workers being told to remain at home without working. The lack of back pay guarantees has added to the uncertainty and concern for affected employees.
