Latvia: President must reverse parliament’s appalling and dangerous decision to leave Istanbul Convention

Latvia: President Must Reverse Parliament's Decision on Istanbul Convention

Amnesty International has responded to the Latvian parliament's vote to leave the Council of Europe convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence, also known as the Istanbul Convention.

Latvia's withdrawal from the Istanbul Convention would be a devastating blow to the protection and rights of the country's women and girls and all people facing domestic violence.

According to Monica Costa Riba, Amnesty International's Senior Campaigner on Women's Rights, this decision sends a reckless and dangerous message to perpetrators that they can abuse and kill women and girls with impunity.

Amnesty International is 100% independent and relies on donations to campaign with objectivity and impartiality.

Author's summary: Latvia's parliament voted to leave the Istanbul Convention.
