Freestore Foodbank in Cincinnati and Shared Harvest Foodbank in Fairfield are among nine Ohio food banks receiving state funding during the ongoing government shutdown.
Governor Mike DeWine announced that Ohio will allocate up to $25 million to support food banks and provide emergency relief while full Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits are unavailable.
Mike DeWine said the funding amount was based on the number of food bank customers receiving SNAP benefits.
The plan also includes $18 million in emergency relief benefits for over 63,000 Ohio Works First recipients—low-income families with children living at or below 50% of the federal poverty level.
These families will receive their usual monthly benefit plus a weekly additional benefit equal to 25% of their typical monthly payment. This support will continue for up to four weeks or until federal SNAP funding is restored.
"Though the federal government plans to use contingency funds to partially cover SNAP benefits, officials warned that the money will be delayed."
These efforts aim to bridge the gap left by federal SNAP disruptions and support vulnerable Ohio residents during the shutdown.
